Wokingham MP Sir John Redwood has expressed his concerns over one of Wokingham’s prominent road junctions.
Writing on his blog on April 1, he said he believed that Wokingham Borough Council is “wrecking” California crossroads and its shops, and that it is spending more money on plans to “damage” other road junctions.
He wrote: “It wants to cut the flows on the successful Woosehill roundabout access, as it thinks Woosehill drivers and service providers have it too easy.”
Sir John confirmed to Wokingham Today that he was referring to plans for a cycle and pedestrian improvements on the A329 Reading Road between Wokingham town centre and Winnersh.
He added: “I do not wish to see this successful roundabout narrowed and restricted.”
Wokingham Borough Council held a consultation from September 25 until October 23 last year. It has not yet revealed the outcome.
At the time it said that plans were part of its efforts to tackle the climate emergency, reduce air pollution and congestion, and improve people’s health by making it easier to walk or cycle.
It said: “The scheme has been designed to help people who don’t usually cycle, and will help everyone feel safer by keeping pedestrians, cyclists and motor traffic separate.”
