A NEW Community Speedwatch group has been set up in Wokingham town by volunteers, as part of an initiative launched by Thames Valley Police last year.
And in one session, volunteers caught more than 40 drivers exceeding the limit.
Community Speedwatch involves volunteers recording details of speeding vehicles using special detection devices. The data is passed to Thames Valley Police, which writes to the registered keeper of any vehicles caught exceeding the limit.
The information also helps police understand the scale of speeding in the area.
Cllr Rachel Burgess, leader of the Labour group, has helped to set up a Community Speedwatch group for Norreys and Wescott in response to resident concerns.
At a recent session on Bell Foundry Lane the group found 44 drivers exceeding the 30mph limit in just 90 minutes — one was driving above 60mph.
Cllr Burgess said “Speeding and road safety is one of the top issues reported to me by residents. As well as campaigning for safer roads, I wanted to take some more action in the community to try and curb excessive speeding in our area and improve residents’ quality of life.
“I’m grateful to the residents who have already helped us run Community Speedwatch sessions — we are keen to recruit more volunteers so we can hold regular sessions in the speeding hotspots.”
