A claim that the new fortnightly bin collections should be reviewed was made at last week’s full council meeting.
Alistair Scott asked Cllr Jordan Montgomery, the executive member for environment and climate emergency why Wokingham Borough Council is continuing with the fortnight bin collections when it is clearly not working, and causing a health hazard across Wokingham. He said: “Added to this, one bin per household is woefully inadequate to safely dispose of fortnightly waste.
“Will this be reviewed to increase the number of bins per household?”
Cllr Montgomery said: “The council has been clear throughout the projects that this new system will reduce refuse, increase recycling rates, contribute to the decarbonisation.of our local economy, and save money that will support the council’s financial position.
“The council made the decision following extensive public consultation that has been well documented.
“Some 85% of other councils in the country undertake this current methodology, and it is proven to work.
“The 180l-litre bin per household is adequate to contain waste that cannot be recycled for families of up to five residents.
“For families of which is up to five residents in the property.
“Through waste composition surveys, it was found nearly 70% of rubbish being disposed of could have, in fact, been recycled, and therefore there should be very little in the black bins.”
