FEBRUARY is especially important to a Wokingham children’s cancer charity.
It’s the month when Ollie Young’s family lost their five year old.
Ollie, who would have been 18 this year, died from a childhood brain tumour, and ever since his death, his family has campaigned to find a cure and prevention for childhood cancer.
They set up the Ollie Young Foundation, which regularly holds fundraising events to celebrate Ollie’s life, and to help support research into the causes and treatment of the disease.
Ollie’s anniversary and his birthday both fall in February, so the month has great significance for his family, and the charity.
Because he loved the colour blue, his family calls this special time feBLUEary.
And to mark its start, they are holding a quiz night to raise funds for the foundation.
“Plans are going well,” said Sarah Simpson, Ollie’s mum and founder of the the Ollie Young Foundation.
“Last year when we did this event, we had around 100 people turn up, which was great.
“We can seat 120, and we’ve sold about half of our tickets so far.
“It can be quite a tricky time of year for people during the dark months at the start of the calendar, but we hope lots of people will come along and have fun.
“For us, it feels like a good way to start feBLUEary.
“We’ll have a blue round of quiz questions, and a few jokey rounds too.”
The quiz will be accompanied by a raffle, with an additional game mid-way through the evening.
“You need to book in advance,” continued Sarah, “and the closing date for entry is pretty soon.
“We’re looking forward to a fun laid-back event, where people can bring their own drinks and snacks, and enjoy time together while raising money for a good cause.”
Tickets for the adult only event can be purchased either as a complete team of eight players, or individually, with the charity teaming people up.
All tickets must be purchased before the event, and all proceeds will go to the Ollie Young research pot.
Drinks and snacks can be brought to the event.
The Ollie Young Foundation quiz night will take place at St Crispin’s School, Wokingham, on Friday, February 2.
Doors open at 7pm, with the questions starting at 7.30pm.
Tickets cost £10 per person, and must be booked by Wednesday, January 31.
