Wimbledon tennis is full of drama,
This year is no exception,
Incredible shots showing skill and power
While others are pure deception.
It’s such an enjoyable spectator sport
We viewers get quite excited !
Always hoping our chosen player
Will in so many words….get knighted!
But I find it endlessly amusing
To look at other folk round the ground,
There are some who stare a white lines
Shouting “OUT” at the speed of sound.
Some of these people are enormously fat,
Playing sport is not in their line,
But they do a good job tracking tennis balls;
In this task they certainly shine.
There are also a great many youngsters
Being efficient as ball girls and boys,
They’ve been trained with military precision,
For they know they’re not playing with toys.
The balls are always where needed,
As the kids tear about with great speed,
Sending balls along the ground to each other
To supply match players, according to need.
Spectators are there in their thousands,
Every seat in the Stands always taken ,
Their clothes make a colourful spectacle,
And sun hats are never forsaken.
Many ladies can be seen waving fans,
For they don’t like feeling too hot,
This could be distracting for players
But their concentration ensures that it’s not.
This year a lady made history,
A European whose name is Marketa,
She won the grand final with great skill,
And could not have played tennis any better.
Her opponent from Tunis called Jabeur
Was visibly distraught at the end,
For she also lost the final LAST year
Which I hope doesn’t send her round the bend.
The armed forces are always on duty
Looking smart in their khaki or blue,
Not sure why their presence is needed,
But it’s a great time out for the crew.
Outside the Wimbledon fencing,
Is a grassed hill where people can see
The matches relayed on a vast screen,
While they picnic with friends over tea.
As for me, I am perfectly happy
Watching tennis on our own TV screen,
I’ve a comfortable chair with soft cushion,
It’s my own Royal Box and I’m Queen!
So why would I toil up to London,
And fight my way in through the queues?
When I could just save myself a small fortune,
And stay calm…. not busting a fuse!
