FIRE chiefs have once again stressed the need to have fitted and working smoke alarms in the home following an incident in Lower Earley this afternoon.
Luckily a woman and her young baby were not hurt when a potato left cooking in a microwave for too long caught fire.
Pumps from Wokingham Road and Whitley Wood raced out to an address in Wimblington Drive when the alarm was raised just before 4.30pm.
The fire had been put out on arrival and the property had been ventilated, but no smoke alarms were found during a check of the property.
Watch manager Roy Buckland from Wokingham Road said: “The potato had been cooking for too long and caught fire.
“Both the young lady and young baby were out of the house by the time we arrived, but there was no smoke alarms.
“This does stress the importance of having smoke alarms fitted in the property.”
No damage to the property has been reported.
