Feathers and Fur visited Evendons Year 2 on Tuesday 22nd January 2019.
Sadie bought in four interesting, beautiful birds of prey because Year 2 are learning about birds. Year 2 met an Indian Eagle owl, a Barn owl, a Harris hawk and a kestrel.
Year 2 learnt that birds of prey catch their food with their claws.
The Harris hawk’s mum was grumpy and she tried to eat him but Sadie rescued him just in time.
The male Harris hawk is smaller than the female. Harris hawks work as a team to catch their food.
A Harris hawk has brown, fluffy wings and it has a special oil on its wings that protects it from the rain.
Another bird was a Barn owl.
“The Barn owl is really white,” said Keira.
Barn owls have one ear on its forehead and one on its left cheek. Barn owls don’t actually use their eyes for hunting, they use their ears a lot more.
In Roman times, people believed that barn owls were actually ghosts!
Year 2 also learnt that one Tawny owl’s eye is bigger than it’s brain.
Year 2 got to hold the kestrel. “It was small and light,” said Hector. It’s a tiny bird and it is fantastic, their wings are so big. Barn owls can hear your heart beat.
“Birds of prey are fascinating,” exclaimed Tegwyn.
