PROTESTORS campaigning to stop a concrete bus lane bridge being built over an historic beauty spot filled the car park of Wokingham Borough Council with the sound of birdsong this evening.
Their protest was a final attempt to share with councillors on the planning committee their concerns over the proposal by Reading Borough Council.
The scheme would link Thames Valley Park with the Vastern Road end of Reading Station, destroying woodland and riverside in the process.
Planning documents reveal that the scheme received 319 objections and just seven letters in favour.
The briefing for the councillors also note that “the proposal does not fully comply with all of the development plan policies” and that it would “result in environmental impacts as a result of the localised effects to the character of that part of the river”.
Despite this, Wokingham Borough Council’s planning officers have recommended that the scheme be approved.
This is the second time that Reading Borough Council has attempted to get the scheme passed – Wokingham councillors turned it down in May.
