A READING pub will celebrate the King’s coronation with a garden party, live music and a hat competition.
The Flowing Spring, near Playhatch, will serve hot and cold food, including vegan options, with drinks available from an outside bar.
Visitors to the free event can enjoy live music in the pub garden from lunchtime through to the evening.
Landlord Nick Willson said: “We had a hat contest in September to celebrate twelve years of owning the pub, and there were some brilliant, imaginative creations then.
“We loved the format that day, with live music and food – it worked a treat.
“The Hats Off competition is a perfect way to celebrate the coronation, and the crown.
“It’s a chance for people to get really creative.”
For the contest, people are asked to bring their own coronation head wear creations fit for a king, preferably based on the coronation theme.
They will be paraded on the Hatwalk, with the creator of the best hat being awarded a prize.
A number of local bands will perform on the day.
They include singer and guitarist Robert Buttrick; Andy and Paul on vocals, guitar and double bass; and Danny McNamara’s folk-inspired trio, Undercurrent.
Third Quarter will also be playing folk-pop-rock covers on vocals, guitar and bass; while Reading five-piece band The Rocket Kings will perform upbeat original songs on ukuleles, guitar, bass and drums.
And musical duo Boxset will play covers in their own stomping style, on vocals, guitar and accordian.
“People can stay and listen to the music all day if they want to,” said Nick.
“We’re putting up the marquee and the tent in the garden, and hoping for a sunny day.
“We’d love to welcome lots of new people from the surrounding area to join us, to come and relax in our garden and listen to some great live music.”
The event will take place at The Flowing Spring, Henley Road, on Sunday, May 7, from 1pm onwards.
