RAW SOUNDS TODAY: Featuring Inspiral Carpets, Wreckless Eric, Tomorrow Bird, That Joe Payne and more

Every week we pick artists with a link to Reading or Wokingham and occasionally from further afield too.

Inspiral Carpets – Dragging Me Down –
You just have to hear that keyboard sound and you know it must be the sound of Clint Boon and the Inspiral Carpets, the band that came to prominence in that Madchester scene of the 90’s. It certainly was a crazy time. I was working at the label that released the classic The Stone Roses album so was around the scene. Great fun but that’s a story for another day! Anyway Inspiral Carpets were a great live band back then and a couple of weeks ago at Sub 89 in Reading they showed that they still are! With that keyboard sound to the fore they stormed through a powerful set of their classics including this one from their 1992, ‘Revenge of the Goldfish’ album. Always good to see another classic band playing in the area. What a great live music scene we have – https://inspiralcarpets.com/

Wreckless Eric – Whole Wide World –
Talking of the classics, we couldn’t resist putting this song in when we heard that Wreckless Eric was coming to play at Reading Face Bar on September 9 thanks to the brilliant Club Velocity team. Originally released on Stiff Records, one of the most innovative record labels ever, it still sounds as fresh and exciting as it did when it was first released. Eric has released a number of impressive solo albums since then so it will be great to hear them played live in Reading very soon – https://www.wrecklesseric.com/

Tomorrow Bird – Next Train Outta Here –
We featured Simon & Jen of Tomorrow Bird in our Christmas playlist last year with a song from their wonderful seasonal album. Now the duo has a brand new album and it’s out this Friday, 30th August! The album is called ‘Braver Days’ and you can see them perform songs from it at their official album launch show at The Rising Sun Arts Centre, Reading on that day! This is their latest single and it’s got a rousing sing-along Americana & blues feel with the usual great vocals from the duo. Get yourselves on the next train to Reading for that launch show – https://www.tomorrowbird.com/

That Joe Payne – Bread & Circuses –
Joe performed with his full band at Wokingham Festival since we went to print and no doubt cemented his reputation as one of the best vocalists around. This is from Joe’s latest album – https://www.thatjoepayne.com/

Rila’s Edge – Deal –
Another brilliant Wokingham Festival act. Sunday home town headliners with the latest in a string of excellent singles – https://www.facebook.com/rilasedge

Ozric Tentacles – Burundi Spaceport –
On the third day of Wokingham Festival, Bank Holiday Monday, the headliners were this legendary band. They are still releasing excellent new music as this track from their latest ‘Lotus Unfolding’ album shows – https://ozrics.com/

Áine Deane – Tales of A Twenty Something –
Áine has supported Sam Smith at Royal Albert Hall, supported Hozier, played Glastonbury, dueted with Pixie Lott and she headlined the second stage at Wokingham Festival on Saturday – https://www.ainedeanemusic.com/

Sour Kix – Stranger Again –
A brilliant slice of uplifting melodic pop rock from the new single by a band that played at Wokingham Festival last weekend – https://www.sourkix.com/

Storm Deva – Free –
Here’s an excellent duo that opened the second stage of Wokingham Festival on August Bank Holiday Monday – https://www.stormdeva.com/
