Many Reading FC fans have voiced their support for former player Yakou Meite after he released a statement regarding the abuse he has received from sections of Cardiff City fans.
Meite joined Reading in 2016 and spent seven years with the club, playing 165 times and scoring 47 goals before moving to Cardiff on a free transfer in 2023.
Despite becoming a fans favourite during his time with the Royals, his time at Championship side Cardiff has been much more difficult.
He has played 63 Championship games for the Welsh club and has netted just three times.
The 28-year-old forward put out a statement where he said that he stopped applied the club’s fans after matches after receiving abuse from some fans.
He said: “”Hi all. Just wanted to speak out after a difficult few weeks where I received and read a lot of comments, abuse in my inbox by our own fans about me and some are definitely out of football.
“I am someone who usually likes to stop at every game, clap the fans and have a good connexion with them, but after all the abuse I received this past few weeks I decided to stop doing it and I’m REALLY sorry for those people who are still supporting me and trusting me.
“Honestly at some point, it’s difficult to know who is with you or against. We are all human and you guys should also understand this can hurt people and change them.
“I will always give my all for the club until the end, but I will never accept to always be the problem when things are going wrong. We should focus on our target together, I’m not your problem.”
As well as getting hundreds of messages of support from Reading fans, former teammate and former Royal Garath McCleary said: “I know you and what I’ve seen is a joke considering the person you are. The real ones know. Keep being positive lil bro.”
