Reading FC legend Dave Kitson has shown his support for supporting local businesses, charities and community groups.

Having finished his playing career, Kitson is now focusing on the next generation of young footballers with the establishment of the Dave Kitson Academy.

A host of small business owners and local charities attended The Dave Kitson Academy’s first ever community networking event at Salty Olive restaurant in Wokingham on Wednesday evening.

Reading FC supporters group STAR, Reading Sunday League side Caversham United and Talking Royals – a forum for Reading fans struggling with mental health challenges – were all represented at the event.

Berkshire based charities Daisy’s Dream and Camp Mohawk were also represented, as were a number of small business owners from the Reading area.

“My time at Reading was the highlight of my playing career,” said Kitson, who still holds the record for most goals scored at The Select Car Leasing Stadium.

“Now I’m committed to giving back and supporting the community, not just with coaching but with initiatives like this.”

He added: “The Dave Kitson Academy is a small business and we rely on the support of local people, so it’s only right that I should do what I can to support local businesses, charities and community groups.”

Reading based travel consultant Sheldon Thellis was one of the business owners who was at the event.

Despite his many years of experience in the travel industry, Thellis has only recently started his own business as a Not Just Travel franchise owner – and says he appreciates the opportunity to be part of a supportive local business community.

“My experience with The Dave Kitson Academy has been amazing,” he said.

“Being part of Dave Kitson’s network has opened doors to countless opportunities for me.”

Health and safety consultant Nick Babington, was also at the event, added: “The Dave Kitson Academy has a fantastic community of local businesses, who are getting to know each other and referring business to each other.

“In addition to the fantastic exposure I am already getting through my partnership with the academy, the networking is superb.”

Other local businesses represented at Wednesday’s event included an estate agent, a barber, a maths tutor, a solicitor and a chiropractor.
