Reading Women 3-1 Spurs Women: Royals showcase late fightback to beat Spurs

Reading FCW vs Manchester Utd Women Goals

A SUPERB late showing from Reading Women saw them take three points as they fought back from a goal down to score three in the final 15 minutes.

Jo Potter equalised for Reading in the 77th minute before Remi Allen netted the decisive goal in the 88th minute, with Amalie Eikeland securing the points in stoppage time to complete a remarkable end to the game.

Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Becky Spencer stayed alert as she made a crucial early double save to deny Fara Williams from close range after Brooke Chaplen’s cut back as the Royals searched for the opening goal in the contest.

Spurs then created the next opening after a headed clearance fell kindly for Kit Graham but she blazed the bouncing ball just wide of Moloney’s goal.

After a goalless opening 45 minutes, it didn’t take long for the deadlock to be broken with the visitors taking the lead just seven minutes into the second half.

Siri Worm beautifully picked out the top corner from the edge of the box as she curled her effort beyond Moloney’s reach to give Tottenham the lead.

Spencer made another important save to preserve her side’s lead as she flew across her goal to keep Eikeland’s effort out after Williams had unselfishly squared her the ball in the box.

Despite Spencer’s impressive showing, the Spurs keeper failed to deal with a Reading corner with a packed box surrounding her, with her fumbled effort falling to Potter at the back post who tapped the ball over the line to equalise.

But the Spurs keeper amended for her error with possibly her best save of the game asher lightning quick reactions allowed her to parry Allen’s header onto the crossbar.

Reading were finally rewarded for their bombardment on the Spurs goal as they took the lead with just two minutes of the 90 remaining with Allen latching onto Angharad James’ flick on to convert the ball from close range, met by jubilant scenes from her teammates.

Kelly Chambers’ side wrapped up the three points in stoppage time as Eikeland broke clear of the Spurs defence and kept her composure to find the bottom corner and seal a fantastic end to 2019 for the Royals.

The win sees Reading move up to sixth in the FA Women’s Super League table, just a point behind fourth placed Manchester United having played nine games.

Next up for the Royals is a tricky away trip to Chelsea on Sunday, January 5.

Reading: Moloney, Leine, Howard, Potter, Pacheco, James, Moore, Allen, Eikeland, Chaplen, Williams.

Subs: Farrow, Utland, Bennink, Rowe, Laws, Reynolds, Quirk.

Goals: Worm 52′, Potter 77′, Allen 88′, Eikeland 90’+10
