WOKINGHAM has been swathed in an eery red glow today – which is the result of sand being whipped up from Africa.
Hurricane Ophelia, which is currently battering parts of Ireland, is thought to have whipped up tropical air and dust from the Sahara, along with forest fires from Portugal and Spain, creating a red haze.
The dust has caused light to be refracted and reflected in longer wavelengths, making it appear red.
The Met Office said the “vast majority” of the dust was as a result of forest fires in Iberia, which have sent debris into the air and that has been dragged north by Ophelia.
