The richest horse race ever staged at Ascot is set to take place tomorrow (Saturday).
This year’s King George weekend starts today, and Ascot has announced that the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes will be the richest race ever staged at Ascot, with prize money increased to £1.5 million.
The Group 1 showpiece will be the headline act of the King George weekend, held on Saturday, July 26, and marks a significant milestone as the race celebrates its 75th running.
The King George has long stood as Europe’s premier midsummer middle-distance contest, drawing in champions from across the globe.
First staged in 1951, this year is the 75th running of the King George. The race boasts a rich history of champions, including Swain and Dahlia, both dual winners, and the legendary Enable, the only three-time winner.
Other greats such as Milll Reef, Brigadier Gerard, Nijinsky, Shergar and Queen Elizabeth II’s Aureole have all triumphed in this race.
In 1975, the clash between Grundy and Bustino, often titled the ‘Race of the Century’, remains a defining moment in Ascot’s history.
Last year’s winner, Goliath, led a race ranked fourth globally, and the best race in the world over a mile and a half.
Away from the track, the King George weekend promises an immersive experience for all.
Guests can enjoy a quintessential English summer party atmosphere, world-class hospitality, and a vibrant afterparty, with the Saturday celebrations set to culminate in a headline DJ set by London-based duo AUDI0C0MINGS00N.
Known for their genre-blending ’cinematic bass‘ sound, Emmanuel Lawal and Ashton Gohil have performed globally at events like Samuel L. Jackson’s One For The Boys and held residencies in New York and Paris.
The pair will also be presenting live from the racecourse on the Saturday so will be on the ground getting to know racegoers throughout the day.
Across the weekend, racegoers can embrace the summer spirit, dress to impress, and soak up the occasion across Ascot’s stunning grounds, bars, and eateries.
