Another political heavyweight was in Wokingham on Sunday ahead of next month’s general election.
Sir Vince Cable, former leader of the Liberal Democrats, spent time with Clive Jones, the Wokingham candidate for his party.
After visiting the campaign office off Molly Millars Lane, Sir Vince joined Clive and a group of local councillors and campaigners on the doorstep in Wokingham Without.
Asked how much of the electorate will base their votes on local or national issues, Sir Vince told Wokingham Today: “I think it’s an understanding of where the local constituency sits in the big picture.
“I think most people understand .. you’re voting for MPs.
“I have been around the country and it’s clear that many people are fed up with this government.”
Sir Vince recently published a book titled How to be a Politician.
Wokingham Today asked him to share one piece of advice for his candidate in Wokingham.
He said: “I think he’s already taken the main bit of advice, which is patience and persistence.
“The people who get through, people who don’t give up the first time.
“So many good people who stand for parliament, then they don’t do well, and they drop by the wayside.
“We lose a lot of talent, but people like Clive have stuck at it, and he’s in the right place now at the right time.
“That’s the thing about getting elected to be a MP.
“You’ve got to be in the right place, with the right party, and at the right time.”
Wokingham Today also spoke to several residents whom had been cavassed by the former party leader, both of whom were excited and impressed that such a high-profile figure had taken the time to visit them and discuss local and national issues.
