The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for snow for later this week.
If the forecast is correct – and it could change between now and Wednesday morning – then up to four inches of snow could fall.
The weather warning issued on Sunday, January 27 says that rain is increasingly likely to turn to snow and those showers will be heavy at times.
The Met Office admits that the most likely scenario is that an inch of snow (between 1cm and 3cm) will fall in most places, with two inches (up to 5cm) in places.
“There is a small chance that some areas could see up to 10cm, more especially over the higher ground,” the forecast adds: this is four inches.
At the moment, rain is forecast from 6pm on Tuesday, turning to snow from 7pm as temperatures drop and wind chill develops.
The snow continues all night through to early morning rush hour on Wednesday.
The Met Office currently says that the likelihood of snow falling is 60%.
Temperatures on Wednesday will struggle to get above 3ºC, with wind chill making it feel like it’s -5ºC at times.
Thursday and Friday will remain just as cold.
The Met Office’s advance forecast adds that there is a “a significant risk of snow” during February.
