The blanket of snow that has fallen across much of the borough this morning has meany that this year’s annual Toy Run is cancelled. However, Barnado’s will be open for toy donations today.
The white stuff, which is forecast to carry on falling across the day, is unpredictable and making driving conditions unsafe for many. Rain had been forecast and roads were, earlier this morning, thick with snow.
Although a final decision was expected by 11.30am, organisers have made a decision to cancel this year’s event.
In a Facebook post, Ben and Jane Spiller sought to reassure bikers that safety was paramount.
“Due to bad weather and safety reasons, the Toy Run this year has been CANCELLED. Unfortunately we cannot control the event – and everyone’s safety comes first.
“However High Close School, Wokingham (RG40 1TT) will be open from noon – 3pm to receive your gifts, if you can make your own way there, preferably by car.
“There will be vans as Amec Foster Wheelers from 12noon today so that the presents still reach the children. Smiths of Whitely Wood will be open tomorrow also.
“We are truly sorry. This does sucks – but everyone’s safety comes first. There will be other years which we will just have to make bigger and better.
“Thank you for your understanding.”
Earlier they had offered this advice:
“Hi folks. It is not looking good. Final decision will be made about the Run at 11.30 today. Suggest you do not leave home before that. DO NOT TRAVEL IF YOU FEEL UNSAFE,” it reads.
