STORM Eunice is expected to cause major disruption to train services across Berkshire.
Great Western Railway (GWR) is warning customers it expects to cut services by half. Where long-distance trains can operate, journey times will be significantly longer.
Current forecasts suggest high winds will exceed 70mph and to ensure trains are able to run safely, speed restrictions across the network are required.
Mark Hopwood, managing director of GWR, said: “Speed restrictions will be in place, but the extent can only be determined by conditions on the ground.
“We will continue to run as many trains as we can but passengers should be aware that we will have to reduce the number we can run, journeys will take longer, and trains will be much busier.”
He also said that those who need to travel should heed the usual advice and check before travelling.
The Met Office has upgraded its weather warning to red in some areas of the country with an amber alert in place for Berkshire, although this may change.
An amber weather warning means there is an increased likelihood of disruption including flying debris, fallen trees or power lines, and a potential for damage to life and property.
To assist customers, GWR is allowing people with tickets for travel on Friday, January 18, to be able to travel on Thursday, January 17, through to Monday, February 21.
