Wokingham & Emmbrook Ladies held its end of season presentation evening to celebrate their season.
This was the first ladies team to compete in Sumas’ colours since 2021, and although none of the squad from that year played this season, two former players from years prior to that did return to the squad.
The remainder of the squad were joined by a mix of players who were playing football for the first time, and those returning to football after many years away from the sport.
The season was a big success for both the team and individuals within it.
Stuart Greig was joined in the coaching and management of the team by Shai Humphries in her first season of coaching.
The passion and skills she brought meant the team exceeded the targets it had set themselves, finishing third in the development division of the Thames Valley Counties Women’s League – with 14 wins from 22 matches.
These achievements, together with her other coaching activities within the youth age groups at the club, led to her receiving a nomination for ‘Manager of the Season’ in the annual Football in Berkshire awards.
Two other players also received nominations in other categories of these awards.
The team’s youngest player, Genevieve Richards, finished top scorer with 22 goals in the 19 games she played. This included an amazing four hat-tricks in what was her first season of senior football. She earned a nomination in the ‘Young Player of the Season’ award.
The third nomination came in the ‘Player of the Season’ category for team captain Megan Bartlett, who also picked up two awards at the Sumas award night. These were Players’ Player of the Year and Supporters’ Player of the Year, for her excellent leadership, as well a team-leading 12 assists alongside her four goals.
The coaches’ ‘Player of the Year’ award went to Phoebe Fenwick for her battling performances and tireless running throughout the season in midfield, to support both the defence and forwards.
The whole team also received individual awards in recognition of its achievements last season.
The team is always happy to hear from potential new players to join this very friendly and sociable group. The club is particularly seeking a goalkeeper for next season.
