THE first plans for a popular fundraiser have been announced – including road closures that will affect residents.
The annual Swallowfield 10+3 race will mark its 10th anniversary next month and once again hundreds of runners and cyclists are expected to take part.
Organised by the 1st Swallowfield Scouts, the fundraiser has three elements: a 10km running race, a 3km fun run that’s hugely popular with children and a duathlon, combining a 10km run with an 18.5km cycle.
Every competitor completing the races will receive a finisher’s medal, and there are special awards for the fastest in class for the 10K race and duathlon, for which the team work with the British Triathlon Association.
Race director Paul Cobbold said: “The beauty of this event is that we arrange for a number of roads to be closed, so that the participants can run in safety.
“Over the past nine years this event has raised thousands of pounds for the 1st Swallowfield Scouts enabling us to offer a range of activities and experiences for our young people, which we believe helps to improve their key skills, including social skills, teamwork, leadership and confidence.”
The event takes place on Sunday, September 15.
Roads in and around Swallowfield will be closed from 9.30am on the Sunday, and will reopen at 2.30pm (or sooner depending upon entrants finishing) and in Farley Hill from 9.30am to 11.30am.
There will be no through traffic in Swallowfield from 9.30am to 2.30pm.
There will also be delays to any local traffic at Brookside Nursery in Swallowfield at 10.30am to allow the races to start safely. Any local traffic will be held for 10 minutes at Swallowfield Park.
