Broad Street (and Langborough Road) reopened to traffic yesterday but eagle-eyed readers noticed that the new York stone crossing paths were stained after the first cars went over them.
Following reader comments on our Facebook page, The Wokingham Paper promised to find out what had happened and whether the staining would be permanent.
A spokesperson for Wokingham Town Council promised that the new York Stone would be cleaned if the markings didn’t wear off in due course.
The tarmac was being laid on the road surface hours before it reopened and Denmark Street was closed.
The spokesperson said: “While it was cooled sufficiently for traffic the bitumen will continue to wear down to expose more of the aggregate in the coming months which will further improve the skid resistance as intended.
“The marking on the raised areas will wear off over that time and if not then it will be cleaned.”

Broad Street’s re-opening was delayed because of the volume of issues underground that have had to be repaired and rectified. It is now expected that the Market Place project will be complete in July.
Cllr Keith Baker, Wokingham Borough Council executive member for highways and transport, said: “We understand the stress and frustration these works have caused and we apologise for the disturbance to people lives and businesses.”
Next month, the main area of Market Place will re-open and the market will be moved back.
Then, in early May the area in front of Broad Street shops completed, with the Denmark Street carriageway works completed in June.
By mid-July, Market Place and Denmark Street shop fronts will be completed.
