TWO WOKINGHAM charities received a welcome cash boost when community-conscious colleagues a Tesco store handed out grants worth £1,500.
Berkshire Vision and the 3rd Wokingham Methodist Guides were presented with their grants by the Finchampstead Road store’s community champion, Louise Jedras.
The good causes received their funding from Tesco’s Community Grants scheme, with shoppers able to nominate or vote for a charitable organisation.
Berkshire Vision provides support, sport and activities to visually impaired children and adults so they can develop skills to navigate the world with safety and ease. It was given £1,000.
Elizabeth Bick, grant writer for Berkshire Vision, said: “We’re very grateful to Tesco for this grant. It will be spent on funding experiences for our younger members to challenge perceptions of what they can achieve, help prepare them for each new transition in life, and show they are visible and valued members of the community.
“The children will enjoy events such as animal encounters, outings to adventure parks, trips to the pantomime with touch tours and opportunities to meet the cast, and more.”

The 3rd Wokingham Methodist Guides aim to empower girls to find their voice, inspire them to discover the best in themselves and to make a positive difference in their community.
They received £500.
Ellie Bennett, the Guide Leader, said: “We’re so pleased to receive this funding. It will enable us to buy new camping and craft equipment, and continue to provide opportunities and new experiences to girls in the community.
“Tesco’s Community Grants scheme really is a fantastic opportunity for charities and groups in the community. It’s amazing that local residents can choose who to support, and it has such a positive impact.”
The Community Grants scheme, in partnership with the Groundwork charity, has supported many Wokingham community projects and good causes in recent years, giving away thousands of pounds.
Ms Jedras said: “We’re so pleased to be able to give this funding to two groups that do such superb work in our communities.
“Without the essential efforts of their tireless volunteers, many people’s lives would not be the same. We’re all really grateful to them for what they do.”
Funding received by these two good causes was the last under the Tesco Community Grants scheme because it has been relaunched as Stronger Starts.
The new scheme will help schools and children’s groups provide equipment for healthy activities or nutritious food and healthy activities, such as breakfast clubs or snacks, to support young people’s physical health and mental wellbeing.
Wokingham shoppers can support their local school and children’s groups by dropping the Tesco blue token they receive at checkout into the relevant voting box as they leave the store.
