TODAY is National Popcorn Day, and to celebrate a cinema in Winnersh is offering a bag of the snack for just £1.
Showcase Cinemas says both salted and sweet varieties are available in the offer, in honour of the snack that has been a staple of moviegoers since the days of the first talkies.
Movies currently being shown include Mean Girls, Poor Things, The Boys in the Boat – which was filmed in Wokingham borough, and Wonka.
Jon Dixon, marketing director at Showcase Cinemas, said: “We’re celebrating National Popcorn Day by treating our customers to a bargain.
“Sit back, relax at the Winnersh Showcase Cinams with the UK’s favourite movie snack and an epic film on the big screen.
“What better way is there to ease into the new year?”
Popcorn’s history dates back thousands of years.
Indigenous peoples in the Americas were the first to discover this corn which pops when heated due to the moisture within its kernel.
Archaeological evidence suggests that popcorn existed in Mexico as far back as 3600 BC.
Native American tribes, such as the Aztecs and the Iroquois, not only consumed popcorn but also used it in rituals and decorations.
Popcorn gained popularity during the 19th century in the United States, becoming a staple at carnivals and fairs, with the invention of the popcorn machine in the late 19th century contributing to its widespread availability.
By the mid-20th century, microwave popcorn revolutionised convenience, becoming a household snack.
Of course, it is also a popular treat when watching a movie and is very much part of the cinema experience.
The offer is for one small bag of popcorn per customer with a valid ticket for a film screening taking place today (Friday, January 19). It can’t be used to upgrade to a larger size.
