Wokingham town council threw open its doors last weekend for its annual open day.
The aim of the event was to provide members of the community to engage with councillors, and to discover the work of the council.
Katy Hughes, town clerk, explained the “meeting” is a statutory obligation that is required to be held every year between March 1 and June 1.
She told Wokingham Today: “It’s usually a meeting that we hold in the town hall in the evening, but we thought we would do something a bit different this year.
“We chose to hold the meeting by having a stall in Market Place where we have got more opportunities to talk to people.”
Leaflets promoting forthcoming events, as well as a survey about the market, were part of the event.
Katy added: “The emphasis of the day is meeting people, and for our councillors to answer any questions.
Councillor Nagi Nagella was one of the many town councillors present at the event.
He told Wokingham Today: “I think the important thing about today is about being visible.
“People walk past the town hall all the time, and they see the sign, but many probably don’t even realise it’s an organisation.
“We have been telling people about some of the events we are doing, as well as some of the things we are doing as a council.”
“Some of the people may be a bit frightened or nervous about approaching the council, so we are putting a human face to the organisation.”
The ‘Wokingham Museum’ was also open to coincide with the open day, and also as part of International Museum Day.
Members of the public were able to learn about the history behind some of the council’s regalia and silverware, including the mayoral chain of office and the town mace.
