A former town centre businessman has passed away at the age of 96.
David Langley operated his bookmaking business in Peach Street from the late 1960s through to its sale in 1988.
He was also a former president of Wokingham Town Football Club in the 1980s and 1990s, and was instrumental in establishing whippet racing at its former home on Finchampstead Road.
Wokingham MP Clive Jones paid tribute to David.
He told Wokingham Today: “I knew David and his late wife Jean for nearly 40 years, as we are both past captains of Sonning golf club.
“He was a lovely man and very good company.
“He always had a wealth of stories about his business life in Wokingham, and his involvement in so many sports.
“We were both very much involved with Sonning’s annual match with Royal Guernsey Golf Club, and even though he had stopped playing in the match he was always keen to know that the strong relationship between the two clubs was progressing.
“That was a relationship the had helped establish back in the 1970s.”
Mark Ashwell, current president of Wokingham Town Football Club, added his tribute.
He said; “David was a proud and influential voice when it came to our football club.
“He was passionate, and we would like to pass on our condolences to his family.”
