TWO minutes work can help secure your internet – that’s the message from Thames Valley Police. The force is encouraging residents to install Quad9, an add-on to your web browser that checks to see if a website is safe.
It does this by checking the DNS (domain name system) for the site you are visiting. Thames Valley Police said these are like public phone books for the web.
While a surfer types “www.youtube.com” into a browser, a DNS service translates that into the associated IP address (199.223.232.0).
Quad9 aims to filter out and remove DNS numbers that are known to be used for fraud. The force said that its service provides an automated way to protect internet users from known malicious websites, like phishing sites designed to steal personal or banking details.

Please note: The Wokingham Paper has not tried the software and is passing on information from Thames Valley Police.
