WORKS to repair an 185-year-old bridge in Twyford have started today (Monday).
The A3032 at Twyford Mill Bridge will be shut to motorists until July 31 while strengthening and waterproofing works are carried out.
Pedestrians and walking cyclists will still have access across the bridge, while residents and businesses will have access to their properties.
The bridge has been showing signs of deterioration, so Wokingham Borough Council’s contractors will be building a concrete saddle to strengthen the bridge’s capacity for modern vehicles.
Once the works are completed the bridge is not expected to need significant maintenance for some time.
A diversion via Wargrave Road, the A4 Bath Road and the A3032, or this route in reverse, will be in place.
Courtney and Arriva bus services will not be able to serve the Twyford Crossroads stop, next to Zappas hairdressers. Passengers should instead use the Wargrave Road stop opposite Twyford Bowling Club.
Buses towards Reading will travel over the crossroads to the A4 New Bath Road, turn left at the roundabout to continue along the A4 towards the Wee Waif where they will rejoin their routes. Services towards Wokingham and High Wycombe will travel this route in reverse.
