South Hill Park Arts Centre are staging a production of Edward Albee’s play “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” from Wed 15 – Sat 18 June, in their Studio Theatre.
The play depicts the harsh realities of love and marriage. It centres on the fiery, challenging and toxic marriage between Martha and George – a middle aged couple.
One late evening brings two unwelcome guests, Nick and Honey, to their door…and eventually, after multiple manipulative games and bitter words, a huge secret is revealed.
On the surface, the play seems quite simple. It’s set in the 1960s in New England and is about two couples spending time in a living room drinking till the early hours of the morning.
But these couples have dysfunctional and very honest relationships. As time goes on and more liquor is drunk, more secrets are revealed. And what may seem like very normal relationships become very complex, and blurring the lines between reality and illusion.
The play was famously adapted into the 1968 film starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, while stage productions have featured stars such as Patrick Stewart and Imelda Staunton.
South Hill Park Art Centre are excited about their own interpretation, with director Sophie Earle saying “I have a cracking cast! It’s very rare to find the perfect individuals for all of your characters. So come down and see how this dysfunctional story unfolds!”
The show runs from Wed 15 – Sat 18 June, with performances starting at 7.30pm. Tickets are available from www.southhillpark.org.uk/events/whos-afraid-of-virginia-woolf/
