OUR front page story this week is of one Wokingham man who needs little introduction to many.
Stan Hetherington is one of the stalwarts of our community: organiser of the Wokingham Music Club, inventor of the Bikeathon, brains behind the Wokingham Walk, originator of the Open Air Cinema, genius behind Wokingham Festival … chances are, if you’ve been to something in Wokingham, Stan has had a hand in it. Our list scratches the surface!
And, like Ian Wisdom, the man behind the Twyford Beer Festival, he is not doing it for any egotistical power trip.
He does it all because he believes in Wokingham and making it a better place for others to live, work and enjoy.
We are in awe of his endeavours, not least his solo cycling trip from Land’s End to John O’Groats to raise £6,000 for Headway, a charity that helped his family when his daughter had a life-changing accident.
Every so often, it’s right and proper that we make a fuss of Wokingham people like Stan, people like Ian, and countless others across the borough who do the same, week in, week out.
We celebrate their achievements and look to learn from them too.
Stan, you are the man!
