The Wokingham Cancer Support Network
The Wokingham Cancer Support Network has been established to support people living in and around the Wokingham borough that are affected by cancer.
Meeting other people with similar experiences can be invaluable.
Self-help and support groups offer a chance for people to talk to others and come together to share experiences and concerns.
The aim of this project is to support people in a number of ways including direct peer-to-peer support, monthly meet-up groups, an online chat facility and an information/signposting hub.
The charity is looking for Cancer Champion Volunteers who will be recruited and trained to deliver direct support in the home or where needed.
They will be able to lend a listening ear as well as help with some tasks such as shopping, light gardening, driving to appointments or anything that is needed for a short time. Volunteers will commit to supporting a person weekly for a few hours over an agreed period.
As a volunteer, you will receive professional training to support you in your role. You will be asked to make a regular commitment to help a person you will be matched with. This will vary around discussions and needs of the person being supported.
Victims First
Working alongside the Thames Valley Police Victims Hub, Victims First is dedicated to making sure that all victims of crime receive the support they need to cope and recover from the impact of their crime.
The charity cares about those affected by crime and work continuously to improve services and support for victims.
Victims First provides free emotional and practical support to all victims of crime, witnesses of crime and family members of victims.
The service is available across Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire and can provide help regardless of whether or not the crime has been reported to the police.
It is seeking to recruit Emotional Support Volunteers, supported by experienced Caseworkers. Training will be provided for all volunteers, in addition to ongoing mentoring and support. The role will require some travel as you will need to meet victims in the community. Travel expenses will be reimbursed.
Minimum commitment is a period of 12 – 18 months.
Wokingham Blue Cross
Blue Cross provides help for pet owners when they cannot afford vet bills, rescue and rehome pets, counselling for pet bereavement and educating children about looking after their pets.
It has a shop in Wokingham’s Denmark Street and is staffed by a friendly and welcoming team. They say, “As much as we work we like to have fun and have a laugh”.
The team feel that this is important, as the volunteers should enjoy their time within the shop.
As the moment till and shop floor cover is required for the mornings on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. The role involves helping serve customers and helping maintain the shop floor.
More activities/duties are available as you learn more within the shop. Volunteers must be friendly and approachable and able to give a good level of customer service.
