I have been Member for Shinfield North since 2011.
Achievements over the last 8 years:
- Working with Reading Borough Council to eradicate traffic congestion on Shinfield Road
- Litter Clearance in the Ward
- Ward Police Borders – whole Ward policed from Wokingham.
- Supporting Neighbourhood Action Groups
- Supporting the Community Flat in Shinfield Rise.
- Promoting and building Affordable Housing in Anson Crescent
- Elected Borough Mayor – 2015
Once re-elected, I will work hard for the residents of Shinfield North to delivering main priorities:
- Resolve residents’ issues
- Oppose further housing development
- Support Local Businesses
- Oppose plans to extract gravel at Bridge Farm
- Support the Community Flat to support residents of Shinfield North
I am passionate about enforcing law and order, eradicating anti-social behaviour and building strong communities.
Steve Newton, Liberal Democrats
Stephen is a commercial manager working for a global financial services company.
Prior to moving to this area, he stood for Parliament on two occasions and was very active in local politics.
Stephen was the inaugural Chair of the Shoebury Community Forum representing over 15,000 residents, local businesses, schools etc. and Chair of the Southend Railway Travellers’ Association and worked closely with the new railway line operators to specify the new rolling stock.
Stephen moved to Wokingham Borough in 2007 and soon became chair of governors at a local primary school during which time the school’s Ofsted rating progressed from “satisfactory” to “good”. Stephen is married with two children living at home and he and his wife are registered foster carers.
Stephen has been involved in youth work for most of his life and is currently part of the team leading an Urban Saints youth group in Earley.

“I live in Shinfield Parish with my partner and work for a local IT company based in Green Park.
“For the past 18 months I’ve had the pleasure of representing Shinfield North on the Shinfield Parish Council. During that time I’ve been regularly knocking on doors asking residents about their experiences of living in the area, their thoughts on the council services being provided, and what improvements they would like to see made so that I can more fully represent their views.
“I’m active in the local community where I’ve campaigned on two important issues: for the reduction in the speed limit on residential roads from 40 mph to 30 mph and to stop the over-development of Shinfield. I’ve also petitioned the council on behalf of residents for additional street lights, to tackle fly tipping, and to stop the green spaces from disappearing in Shinfield.
“For me it’s important that our local politicians are active in our community, motivated to tackle issues which matter to us, and pro-active enough to seek out everyone’s views.”
