WOKINGHAM Parliamentary candidate Clive Jones has called the results a springboard for the Liberal Democrats.
The party is looking to win the new parliamentary seat of Wokingham in the forthcoming general election, bringing to an end John Redwood’s near 40-year stint as MP.
Mr Jones, who stood down as a councillor at the local elections on May 2 to spend more time on his campaign, said he was pleased with the local election results as the party had gained a seat.
“We’ve gone up, and have 27 seats while the Conservatives have gone down three.
“For me as parliamentary candidate that is very good news because we have 20 seats in the Wokingham parliamentary seat, the Conservatives 10.
“We have won seats in Conservative heartlands, in Thames ward, Wokingham Without, and Swallowfield. That must frighten the Conservatives.
“It shows that the Liberal Democrats have got a really good chance at the next general election.”
