BERKSHIRE residents are being called to join a national palliative and bereavement support organisation this October for their annual 10k hike beneath the stars to celebrate loved ones.
The Sue Ryder Starlight Hike Thames Valley gathers hundereds of walkers and their friends, family, and colleagues to take part in a night-lit walk for charity.
Sue Soffe, senior community fundraiser for Sue Ryder Duchess of Kent Hospice in Reading, said: “The evening is an opportunity for the community to get together and light up the skies for their loved ones, to raise funds, and help create a future where everyone has access to care and support at the end of their life.”
The event begins with live music from DJ2Play and a Zumba warm-up, after which walkers in fancy dress, flashing headwear, and neon face paint will set out on a 10k hike.
As they draw to the end of the walk,with its views of the river Thames, participants will be serenaded as they cross the finishing line by UK adult community group Glee Choir.
Ms Soffe continued: “People can take part as a team, raising funds jointly, or individually.
“Together we can ensure that no one has to face dying or grief alone.
“If you can’t join us on the hike but still want to be part of this incredible event, we are also looking for volunteers to support the event.”
A dedication area will enable people to take a moment to remember someone they love and miss, and new for this year will be a donation station where people can bring unwanted clothes to be sold in Sue Ryder charity shops, helping to reduce waste and further support the organisation.
Broadcast journalist and Presenter, Chris Hollins is lending his support to the event.
He said: “I know how much Sue Ryder means to local families and how important their work is in supporting people approaching the end of their lives or grieving.
“That’s why I am encouraging everyone to step out in support of the charity so they can continue to be there when we need them most.”
Last year, Sue Ryder’s hospice teams provided care to more than 8,700 people, through its Sue Ryder Duchess of Kent Hospice and at home through Sue Ryder Palliative Care Hub South Oxfordshire.
The organisation offers expert and compassionate palliative care services, and support for people living with grief at a time when they need it most.
The fundraising event is supported by Azego and Gravity Personnel.
It will take place at a new location this year, in Mapledurham Estate, Reading, on the evening of Saturday, October 5.
Gates open at 5pm, with the walk starting at 6pm, and ending at 10pm.
Standard tickets cost £20 for adults, £8 for under 18s, and are free for five years and under..
Subject to availability, tickets on the day will cost £23 for adults and £10 for under 18s.
