Kerbside collection of glass jars and bottles in Bracknell has been delayed until 2027.
Bracknell Forest Council has already invested in a new fleet of bin lorries to collect glass bottles, but the service will not begin until March 2027 at the earliest.
Increased recycling collections are a priority for the current administration, especially for Council Leader Mary Temperton, who taught climate change in school for many years.
It is understood that the council faces two challenges: firstly budget, but also getting the refuse collection service ready for the new collections.
Cllr Temperton (Labour, Great Hollands) said: “One of the challenges we’ve got to sort out is where to put the bins. In some places, like Great Hollands, 20 houses share one car park point where they share individual bins.
“By delaying the new service, we will save £360,000 – £90,000 per month.”
Bracknell is currently collecting 80 per cent of waste glass bottles and jars in bottle banks, but the UK government has stipulated that glass must be collected door to door.
Councillor Mike Forster (Lib Dem, Sandhurst) said: “Missing the kerb side glass collection deadline in Bracknell Forest is a sad reflection on the desperate measures that Bracknell Forest Council is contorting itself through to make ends meet.
“The root cause of this is a failure by this government and those previous to properly fund local authorities.
“Bracknell Forest Council received one of the worst funding settlements in the country, we deserve better and our MP, Peter Swallow, needs to fight harder for our residents.”
