The Vicar of the church Theresa May attends has congratulated her on becoming the UK’s Prime Minister elect following Andrea Leadsom’s withdrawal from the Conservative Party leadership race.
The Revd Jamie Taylor, vicar of St Andrew’s in Sonning, promised that the congregation will pray for her in her new role, just as it has always prayed for the nation’s leaders.
He added that Mrs May is a “very supportive member” of the historic church as well as being a “hardworking and respected MP”.
Speaking to The Wokingham Paper, Mr Taylor said: “On behalf of all at St Andrew’s Church in Sonning, I warmly congratulate Theresa May MP as she prepares to take up the daunting responsibilities before her.
“She is a hardworking and highly respected local MP and has been a valued and very supportive member of our church family for the last 20 years. I believe she is well placed to lead our nation and to deliver a successful negotiation as we leave the European Union.
“We pray weekly for Her Majesty and those set in authority under her, and that prayer will take on a little more significance for us at St. Andrew’s in the years ahead.”
St Andrew’s Church is close to the River Thames and George Clooney’s new home. It dates back to the 10th century and its church tower offers unrivalled views of the Berkshire and Oxfordshire countryside.
Sonning is on the very edge of Wokingham borough and falls within Mrs May’s Maidenhead constituency.
