Wokingham MP Clive Jones has shared his view on a potential ban on young people using social media.
Speaking exclusively to Wokingham Today, he said: “Families in Wokingham and across the country have made their concerns clear about the impact smartphones and social media are having on children’s wellbeing, and I share those concerns.
“The evidence increasingly shows that addictive design, harmful algorithms and inappropriate content are contributing to serious mental health harms among young people.
“More than 1,000 local residents have written to me about this issue, which is both heartening to see so many care about the future of young people, and deeply concerning, as it underlines just how widespread these worries are.
“That is why I support introducing age ratings for social media and setting clear, enforceable, age-appropriate boundaries online.
“This is not about banning technology, but about putting children’s welfare first, backing parents and schools, and ensuring tech companies take responsibility.
“I welcome the growing cross-party momentum on this issue and will continue to support robust, practical legislation.”
