Oxford United’s bid to prise Charlie Savage away from Reading FC has added fresh spice to the longstanding county rivalry between the two clubs.
Oxford United’s reported offer of around £500,000 for the Wales international midfielder was rejected by Reading, who value Savage far more highly and see him as integral to their promotion push this season.
Manchester United would also recieve a large chunk of any potential sale having inserted a sell-on clause as part of the deal which allowed the Welshman to join the Royals in the summer of 2023. It’s believed that United’s sell-on clause is around 50%.
Savage, 22, has been a regular presence in Reading’s midfield since joining from United, contributing goals and creative spark as they chase a return to the Championship.
After the news broke of Oxford’s reported bid for Savage, several Reading fans reacted on social media.
One fan said: “Laughable (bid), but feels very good we are in a position we can say that now and reject these pathetic bids.”
Another added: “Would need at least another zero before that would be considered.”
Another supporter said: “He won’t leave for them. They will be in League One next season, more chance we’ll be in the Championship next season.”
Oxford, recently navigating change under new boss Matt Bloomfield, sought a midfielder of his quality to bolster their squad amid a tough run of results.
Savage’s performances this season have attracted wider interest beyond the immediate derby, but the Royals are determined to keep hold of him.
The transfer window remains open, though, and whether Oxford return with an improved offer or look elsewhere, this latest episode is certain to be another talking point in the history of contests between the two outfits.
