We’re dreaming of a white Christmas – just like the ones we used to know.
Tree tops may glisten, but as you write your Christmas cards and your days are being merry and bright, what are the chances of Wokingham being a winter wonderland on December 25?
The early forecasts suggest that, unlike 2010 when snow lay roundabout, deep and crisp and even, there will be little chance of the white stuff this year.
The Met Office’s advance forecasts indicate that it will be wet and windy, with strong gales and variable temperatures. Although it will be cold in the north the South appears to be a different kettle of fish.
Other advance forecasts seem to agree.
The Weather Outlook says that early forecasts predict a mild Christmas with no chance of snow.
However, there is a glimmer of hope for snow fans: Netweather.tv says that the jetstream will bring a blast of cold air across the UK and there’s even a remote possibility that there could be some snow showers next weekend (December 12/13).
And the Daily Telegraph is predicting a fortnight of bad winter weather – but it suggests that it will be gone by Christmas.
But there is one potential indicator of a hard, cold winter – the berries on the bushes by Shinfield Parish Council are blossoming, with a bumper crop. According to country tradition, it’s a sign that winter will be a cold ‘un.
We’ll keep you posted.
