Wokingham borough A-level results 2019

Today is A-level results day and pupils in schools across Wokingham borough – and just over the border – are celebrating their grades.

We’ll be bringing you updates from the schools as we get them.

YOU’VE all done very well. That’s the message to A-level students from Wokingham Borough Council’s executive member for children’s services.

Cllr UllaKarin Clark was full of praise for the teenagers, after learning that the number of top grades – A* to A – has increased by more than fifth over last year.

This, she said, is in contrast to a national decline in top grades. The percentage of pupils achieving A*- C grades remained the same as 2018’s results at 74.4%.

The 2019 results were published on Thursday, August 15 and, across England and Wales, pupils returned to school to learn their results.

Locally, Wokingham’s average for a pass – grades A*-E – is also above the national average, with many schools scoring almost 100%.

The overall average for schools across the Wokingham borough is 97.7%.

Cllr Clark added: “I’m sure teachers and parents will join me in congratulating all the students on these fantastic results. It takes hard work, perseverance, and commitment to achieve grades such as these.

“I’d also like to thank the hardworking teachers, who have worked long hours to ensure students have been supported throughout their studies.

“I especially wish to congratulate students who achieved the results they were aiming for. I wish them every success in their next steps, be that higher education, apprenticeships, or entering the workplace.”

Abbey School

Abbey School
Pupils from The Abbey School have been celebrating their A-level results

ALMOST one in seven sixth-form students at the Abbey School will be starting studies at an Oxbridge university this autumn after achieving some impressive exam results this summer, in both A-levels and the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma.

The Reading-based school said that in its A-level results, overall, a third of students had a clean sweep of A*-As grades, while more than half of all entries were A*-A grades.

A-level students are going on to study subjects including music, modern and medieval languages, criminology, cyber and computer security, law with German and German law, French and German linguistic studies, biochemistry, veterinary science, medicine, mechanical engineering, electronic engineering, and mechatronics and robotics.

One student is going to study nuclear engineering on submarines as part of a British Navy Degree Apprenticeship.

The Abbey said that its A-level results come after impressive results were achieved by fellow Sixth Formers undertaking the IB diploma earlier this year – in July, half of the girls scored 40 points or more, out of a maximum 45 points, placing them in the top 7% of all students studying the IB worldwide.

The Abbey School
Students celebrate their exam results at The Abbey School

In a statement, The Abbey’s headteacher Rachel Dent said: “I am incredibly proud of all that our students have achieved.

“As a school, we continue to be academically ambitious for all our students and once again these results are testament to our outstanding teaching throughout the School.

“It’s not just in academia where they excel. We have seen great achievements from our Sixth Formers across a breadth of activities; from music, performing, sport, outdoor adventure, debating and community involvement, students have taken every opportunity available to them and shown life is for living.

“One of the things The Abbey prides itself on is instilling students with a real love of learning and I’m delighted to see them carrying on their educational journeys to university or undertaking voluntary work or travel as part of a gap year.”

An earlier version implied that all students going on to further studies at university were doing so from the A-level grades. The Abbey School has asked us to make clear that their further education places were obtained after studying for the IB and A-levels. We apologise for this confusion.

Students’ stories

Jack Readings, 19 and from Bracknell, was one of the college’s top performers, achieving a A* grade in further maths. He studied maths, accounting and AS business at Bracknell and Wokingham College last year and achieved A* for maths, A* for accounting and A for AS level Business.

He will now take up an offer from The London School of Economics, University of London where he will study maths with economics.

A happy Jack said: “I did A-levels here because they offered accounting which not a lot of colleges do. I was originally going to do an apprenticeship, so I swapped some of my A-levels around, but then figured out I wanted to go to university, but obviously, you need three A-levels.

“So I came back to do the third this year and worked at the same time to save money for university.

“It’s also allowed me to realise what’s possible before I never thought I’d be here today with the grades I got.”

Binfield teenager Sophia Hesling, achieved an A grade in business, an A in history and an A in Extended Project Qualification and is going to The University of Warwick to study Law.

The 19-year-old said: “I went to school beforehand and didn’t really like it. The teachers just left you to your own devices and didn’t help you. The teachers here believed in you more.

“They were a lot more helpful and it made you want to try harder. And they just seemed to know their stuff more.

“You have more freedom here and people believe in you that you will do stuff so it’s nice. It gets you ready for university.”

Also celebrating was Hamza Akram, 19 and from Reading. He gained an A in chemistry and a B in maths and will go to the University of Bristol to study medicine and hopes to become a doctor.

Hamza retook his A-levels at Bracknell and Wokingham College.

He said: “I really enjoyed my time here, even though it’s only been a year. The quality of teaching was really good, especially maths and chemistry. It was a really good learning environment and everything you needed was there.”

“We look forward to welcoming them all to Presentation Evening in December to celebrate their achievements.”
