THE BOROUGH’S sports stars were again recognised in the annual Wokingham Borough Council sports awards.
Held at Holme Grange School in Wokingham on Friday, a host of awards were handed out on the night with a bit of help from Reading Women FC manager Kelly Chambers.
Woodley United’s Bill Rodda was named the Unsung Hero while Craig Hunter picked up the final gong of the night, the Chairman’s Award, for his work with Reading Rugby Club and the Berkshire Banshees Wheelchair Rugby Club.
He is currently working to crowdfund £6,400 to buy specialised rugby wheelchairs so players have appropriate chairs to use. Each wheelchair costs £3,200.
Reddam Gymnastics Senior Men’s team were deemed to be the male team of the year, while the talented youngsters in the Wokingham District Primary Schools Girls Football Team were the female team award winners.
The Kestrels work to reach out to the
wider community was also recognised, and the Thames Valley Kings wheelchair
basketball team received an honour for their service to disabled sport.
In a change to previous years, there was no individual honour given to a primary school, but instead the schools that achieved platinum or gold status in the Schools Games Mark scheme were presented with appropriate trophies.
The awards were once again hosted by the voice of Wokingham’s sport, Jack Sulman.

This year there was not an award for an individual Primary School, but instead a number of Primary Schools who had achieved Gold or Platinum status under the School Games Mark scheme were presented with their School Games Mark trophies at the ceremony as follows:
Platinum: Nine Mile Ride, Shinfield St Mary’s & Radstock
Gold: Addington, All Saints, Hillside & Robert Piggott
