Sportsperson of the Year, sponsored by Designs for Living
Winner: Helen Wilson
For the second consecutive year, the inspirational Helen Wilson was chosen as the Sportsperson of the Year, sponsored by Designs for Living.
Helen’s incredible story continues to inspire those across the borough and beyond after going through a life saving kidney and liver transplant surgery, she’s never allowed this to stop her.
She has competed at six British, one European Games and two World Games since 2015.
And her journey is far from done after she was recently selected to represent Team GB and Northern Ireland in the World Transplant Games in Dresden, Germany next year..
“It’s so exciting, I really didn’t expect to win the award again,” said a shocked Helen at the conclusion of the awards ceremony.
“It’s so humbling especially when you hear what all the other amazing award winners have been up to as well.
“It’s brilliant because it helps me on my mission to raise awareness so I can use this to add to my story and hopefully get even more people listening to it.”
Helen is now stepping up her intensity in training ahead of preparations to compete for Team GB in 2025.
She continued: “Preparations are going really well and come the New Year we will start ramping that up. By the spring I’ll be training six days a week and then that will be built onto twice a day.
“I want to go out there and enjoy the Games as much as I can. I’ve got target distances in my head, I just have this feeling with the way training is going that I’m going to be able to throw further. I think there’s still more to come.
“I have the British Transplant Games from August 1-4, which is held in Oxford and then the World Games start on August 17 so it will be a very full on month, but hopefully it will be successful.”
