Hero of the Year, sponsored by Places Leisure: Sue Jackson
THIS year’s Hero of the Year award, Sponsored by Places Leisure, was given to Sue Jackson.
Ms Jackson is the founder of Wokingham in Need, which saw the opening of a new kitchen at The Salvation Army Church and Community Centre in Wokingham.
It aims to help those who are without homes, who are vulnerable, or in need of help within the borough, as well as continuing to support drop-in centres and the wider community.
Ms Jackson said she was “absolutely amazed” to win the award.
“I didn’t expect it at all– the award says ‘hero’ but it’s for the wonderful team behind me, and I couldn’t have done it without them.
“There are a few of them here with me this evening, and I would especially like to thank them for all their hard work.
“Nobody is paid with our charity, everyone is a volunteer and works incredibly hard.
“It’s absolutely gorgeous to be here in the room this evening, and it really gives you an extra spring in your step.
“It will be one of those things which helps us show that we’re here, that we’ve made a mark, and that we’ve got more to do to help and better the community.
“And thank you to the organisers for their hard work.”
