WOKINGHAM businesses are being encouraged to join a scheme aimed at making it easier for people to reuse containers and reduce single-use plastic consumption.
Earlier this month was World Refill Day, which has inspired town centre-based eco store Maya’s Refillables to make the call for other firms to sign up to the scheme.
The Refill Scheme is a global organisation which aims to end plastic pollution due to single-use plastic packaging. Participating businesses offer refills of items such as water, coffee and dry foods.
Maya’s Refillables says it now offers a range of accredited refillable cleaning products aimed at professionals in the catering, hospitality and leisure industry as well as offices and care homes, again making it easier for people to refill old bottles and containers.
But the company wants other businesses to do their bit.
“If you are a business which offers products in refillable packaging, you can join the scheme for free, and receive publicity and support from the Refill organisation,” says Maya Gheorghe, who runs the business.
“This includes businesses which offer free refills of water bottles.”
The scheme is important, says local organiser Rachel Bishop-Firth.
“With the current hot weather, we want to encourage people to use refillable drinks bottles, and use the free Refill app to find out where they can refill them,” she said.
