WOKINGHAM fans of Game of Thrones looking forward to the big finale but don’t want the plot to be given away in advance can now apply for special spoiler insurance.
Anyone who remembers the episode of The Likely Lads where Bob and Terry try hard to avoid the football score before they get to see Match of the Day will understand the problem. And in the 21st century, where whole plotlines are strewn across the internet in seconds, eschewing details of Jon Snow’s final hour will be incredibly hard.
But help is at hand from Endsleigh Insurance which says its special policy will allow Game of Thrones fans in in Wokingham to claim financial compensation for plotlines ruined by friends, family or (anti)social media.
The show’s finale will be broadcast in America at Sunday, but UK fans will have to wait until 9pm on Monday to see it on satellite television, meaning they’ve got an agonising 19 hours to remain spoiler free.
Endsleigh said that the time difference provides numerous opportunities for plot leaks, certain to ruin the long-awaited final episode for Game of Thrones fans.
Its policy, it adds, will help appease disgruntled fans by offering financial compensation up to the value of £100 per person for anyone who has their viewing experience tarnished by a spoiler or plot reveal.
Claimants will also receive a consolatory NOW TV pass, meaning they can rewatch all eight series.
Julia Alpan, head of marketing at Endsleigh, said: “Game of Thrones is one of the biggest shows of the last decade and the last few episodes promise to bring in some of the largest audiences on record.
“With the show historically airing on US screens ahead of the UK, spoilers have always been an issue – so we wanted to address that head on with the first ever spoiler insurance policy, that will offer financial compensation for anyone whose day is ruined by an unwanted plot reveal.
“Whether it’s a colleague at work who has stayed up and streamed the show at 2am, or a rogue news article giving away the story on social media – our Spoiler Cover will help provide consolation for fans in Wokingham who have had the ending revealed prematurely.”
“This is the first time we’ve launched a spoiler insurance offering, but if we receive a good response then we might even roll the policy out for other popular TV shows.”
Of course, terms and conditions apply and there is only a limited number of cash pay-outs and NOW TV passes are available, and customers will need to register details to be in with a chance of receiving compensation. Endsleigh say that successful claimants will be notified by Friday, May 31.
The finale is shown at 2am and 9pm on Sky Atlantic on Monday, May 20.
