New research has revealed that Wokingham is one of the healthiest areas in England.
Health experts at Now Patient carried out research to reveal the healthiest areas in England based on factors such as obesity rates, the percentage of adults who eat their 5-a-day and are classified as physically active, as well as the average life expectancy in each area, the percentage of smokers and the areas with the most gym-related Google searches.
Wokingham was ranked in sixth place in England with an overall healthy score of 8.14.
Individually, Wokingham was noted to be third-ranked in England for obesity. Some 22.4% of adults are classified is obese.
Navin Khosla, pharmacist at Now Patient, told Wokingham Today: “When looking at Wokingham’s ranking, we can see that this area has achieved the position of 6th healthiest English area overall.
“Some of the key contributors to this high ranking are the high search rates for gym memberships with over 1,200 in the past year.
“The area also has a relatively low smoking population at only 7.5%, which is the second lowest in England.
“Wokingham can also boast its long life expectancy, ranking sixth with the average resident living to 83 years old.”
Elsewhere, Kensington and Chelsea has the lowest proportion of obesity rates amongst adults compared to other areas in the country, totalling 11.6%. Lambeth has the second lowest at 14.2% and Wandsworth has the third lowest with 14.4%.
Islington has the highest number of adults consuming their 5-a-day at 43%. Herefordshire came in second place with 40.7% and Kensington and Chelsea in third with 40.6%.
Some 77.3% of adults in Bath and North East Somerset are physically active, which is the highest in the country. Adults in Windsor and Maidenhead took second place with 76.2% and York in third with 75.2%.
Residents in Kensington and Chelsea have an average life expectancy of 86.02 years which is the highest in England. Westminster has the second highest at 85.91 years and Camden in third at 85.39 years.
Just 6.2% of residents in Richmond upon Thames are classified as smokers, which is the lowest figure in England. Wokingham has the second lowest figure at 7.5% and Sefton has the third with 7.7%.
Between August 2022 and July 2023, there were 3,141 gym-related searches per 10,000 people carried out online in neighbouring Reading, which was the highest in the country, followed by 3,007 in Sutton and 2,660 in Brighton and Hove.
