MEMBERS of a physiotherapy clinic in Wokingham are setting their sights on a fundraising climb to help a young woman fulfil her dream of driving across America.
Seven team members from Rodger Duckworth Physiotherapy, which is based in Rectory Road, are warming up to climb Mount Snowdon next Saturday (13) to help raise money for Kate Mellor who has Congenital Muscular Dystrophy.
Despite needing 24/7 medical care and using an electric wheelchair, 23-year-old Kate graduated with a First Class Bachelor of Arts Degree in Digital Media Design from The University of Winchester last year, and now wants to use her photography as a way of documenting her travels. She has been inspired to blog her journey to communicate the challenges that come with travelling such an extensive way with her disability, but to also motivate others to achieve their own dreams.
The team are aiming to raise £2,000, which will cover the cost of a wheelchair-accessible vehicle for Kate’s trip.
Physiotherapist Salil Das, who has organised the sponsored climb, said: “I was a little emotional watching Kate’s video and felt compelled that we as a practice should try and contribute in some small way to helping her achieve her dream. The challenges that she faces on a daily basis only magnify her amazing determination and courage and I know that on a personal level she is a real source of inspiration. I can’t wait to see her amazing photos!”
Kate said: “I’m completely overwhelmed by the support the team are giving me. I cannot put into words how much it means. They are truly wonderful people, I can’t thank them enough!”
Kate’s mother Jane, who has worked at the practice for more than 10 years, said: “We have known for a long time how independent Kate wishes to be. My colleagues at Rodger Duckworth believe in her too and know her courage and determination will see her achieve her goal.”
