FIRE CREWS were called to the former Post Office in Wokingham town centre early this morning.
The Broad Street site, which still houses the Royal Mail sorting office, had flooding in its basement.
Wokingham Today understands this will have an impact on the borough’s postal services today, with deliveries and collections on hold and only a limited number of parcels delivered. This has yet to be confirmed by Royal Mail, and a reader has contacted us to say they have received post this morning.
As well as members of the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service, a team from electricity firm SSE attended to help make the area safe.
No other businesses in Broad Street are affected and, although fire crews remain on scene, the pavement is open as normal.
A spokesperson for the fire service said: “At 6.22am on Monday, July 17, we received reports of an incident on Broad Street in Wokingham.
“Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service crews from Wokingham Road, Wokingham and Bracknell fire stations were sent to the scene.
“Upon arrival, crews discovered flooding in a basement. Firefighters secured the scene and isolated the building’s electrical and gas supplies.
“Crews remain at the scene of the incident at this time.”
A spokesperson from SSEN said: “Following a call from the local fire service this morning, our teams have attended the property and have isolated the supply there.”
Royal Mail has been contacted for comment.
