Residents and local businesses have been warned to be careful after Wokingham was targeted in an apparent social media scam.
Several posts appeared last week asking for businesses to express their interest in taking part in an ‘Easter event’ in Wokingham town centre.
The post, which was lacking in detailed information, asked for anyone interested to send a direct message to an account which appeared to belong to a social media user in the United States.
Further enquiries by Wokingham Today showed the ‘event organiser’ was requesting personal information along with a deposit fee.
The same user had also posted a large number of similar events in locations around the country.
Wokingham town council confirmed that had no event planned, and that any events organised by them would be done through official channels.
