A BOROUGH grant-giving charity is helping to make the festive season extra special this year with its Christmas Cheer awards.
Wokingham United Charities is supporting 10 charities as they provide Christmas cheer this month through lunches, gifts, games, hampers, vouchers, and a tea dance.
Charities benefiting from the Wokingham United Charities grants are: Age UK Berkshire, The Rotary Club, Power of Parenting, Project Salama, ABC to read, The Cowshed, The Link Visiting Scheme, Sunflower Club, Kaleidoscopic, and The Grub Club.
Christmas Cheer enables Age UK, which supports older people in the borough, to host a Christmas tea dance, while the Wokingham Rotary Club is providing supermarket vouchers for families in need across Wokingham; and Power of Parenting is able to provide children and young people in the care system with hampers, gifts, special trips and courses.
Project Salama, which supports Reading families experiencing hardship through abuse and displacement, can provide essential items packages and Christmas gatherings; ABC 2 Read can buy new books and educational games for children in 28 Wokingham Schools; and The Cowshed is filling individually tailored sacks of toys for children and young people up to age 19.
The grant enables The Link, which is committed to alleviating loneliness and isolation among older people in the borough, to host Christmas lunch for those who would otherwise be alone on Christmas Day; the Sunflower Club is hosting a Christmas celebration for people in their 70s and 80s; Kaleidoscopic UK will provide Christmas food hampers for 50 families surviving domestic violence; and The Grub Club is able to hold a children’s Christmas party.
All these festive events are made possible by the Wokingham United Charities grant.
The organisation has said how pleased it is to be able to support a wide range of needs and age ranges through the scheme.
